Dear Reiner, dear Christian, dear Friends,
This letter is sent on behalf of the central committee of the European Federalist Movement (MFE), which has asked me to write to you to set out the expectations with which Italian federalists, and all of the pro-European forces in our country, are currently watching the political developments in Germany.
Today, Germany holds the key to Europe’s destiny. Indeed, the future of the European Union depends on its ability to create a solid coalition government, and on the European position that this government will express. With France now having managed to overcome two old taboos — its historical opposition to political union and its resistance to Treaty reform —, the way is finally clear for Germany to play a decisive part in realising the design that it has always pursued: that of a federal union. At last, Europe will be able to express the full force and political power of the ideals enshrined in the design of its founding fathers.
Aware of the great credibility and expertise accumulated by Europa Union Deutschland over many long decades of activity, which make it an influential voice in Germany’s political landscape, we are counting on your steadfast support, within your country’s political environment and institutions, for the right solution, both for Germany and for Europe.
