The Federal Committee of the Union of the European Federalists, meeting in Brussels on the 12-13 December 2014, worried by the launch by the Movimento 5 Stelle of a campaign promoting a referendum on the exit of Italy from euro, in one of founder countries of European integration process supports and encourages the action of Italian federalists opposing anti-Europeanism in their country and welcomes MFE’s press release circulated on December 8th, stating that:
"ALL THOSE ASKING TO LEAVE EURO WANT TO REDUCE ITALY TO POVERTY!
ENOUGH WITH FALSEHOODS AND WITH APPRENTICE SORCER’S REMEDIES!
It is against any logic to state and to suggest:
– that Italy, by leaving euro and adopting again the lira (or even the currencies of the small Italian states of the sixteenth century), would recover its monetary sovereignty;
– that simply by contracting more debts and printing waste paper, more jobs, higher investments, more development, better social welfare would magically be created;
– that Italy, as every Eurozone country, could save herself by acting alone and, by leaving Europe, in a more and more interdependent and multipolar world, would step into a new golden age.
Those really willing to overcome the crisis and re-launch development and employment must fight to strengthen monetary union into a genuine federal union, democratically controlled by citizens, and stop selling as realistic last century’s unsuccessful formulas".
